POTD: Hamelin Pool Stromatolites

Life in Hamelin Pool is one of the reasons Shark Bay (Monkey Mia is part of it) is listed as a World Heritage Area.

Living stromatolites (living fossils) contain microbes similar to those found in 3.5 billion year old rocks - the earliest record of life on earth. As such, the stromatolites provide a record of local environmental changes. (More info on Shark Bay websites)
